When ravens make that “water-dropping-from-a-great-height” sound, their whole bodies are engaged.
The throat feathers point out in all directions as they create that hauntingly hollow sound. Shoulders/wings go back and the tail spreads out wide and flat. That horizontal line you see behind is the tail, spread out like a fan.
They often engage the nictitating membrane, which gives the impression that they’re closing off outside distractions to concentrate solely on perfecting that otherworldly sound.
It’s a virtuoso operatic performance every time.
